Every year thousands of cats and dogs die unnecessarily due to overpopulation. Many end up at the Animal Shelter and others are forced to exist on their own, exposing them to viruses, accidents, starvation and abuse. You can help solve this problem by spaying and neutering your companion animals and encouraging your friends and neighbors to do the same.



What is Spay and Neutering? 
Spaying and neutering is a safe and simple operation that sterilizes dogs or cats so they do not reproduce. Males are “neutered” and females are “spayed.” Any veterinarian can perform this common surgery.



Why Should You Spay or Neuter Your Pet?

• Your pet will be healthier: There is no health benefit for female animals to go through pregnancy and birth, and there is no medical reason for a male animal not to be neutered. In fact, spaying and neutering helps protect dogs and cats from many diseases, including certain types of cancers.

• Your pet will be happier and safer: 
When cats and dogs go into heat they develop bad habits. Unneutered male animals roam the neighborhoods to find the females, and get into fights with other dogs and cats. Unneutered male cats mark their territory by spraying urine, even indoors. It is much easier to keep sterilized dogs and cats at home where they won’t be hit by cars or killed by other animals.

• You’ll save many lives:
You may think that it is easy to find good homes for your newborn puppies or kittens. But, the truth is that many puppies and kittens are dumped at animal shelters or at the side of the road. A few of these are fortunate enough to find homes, but many do not. Every year thousands of animals must be killed at our Long Beach Animal Shelter just because there are no homes found for them. By spaying and neutering your pets, you will be doing your part to help end the tragedy of pet overpopulation.
