Texting Avoiding the Five Deadly Mistakes

BY DR. DIANA KIRSCHNER

The advent of text messaging has changed the face of dating as we know it. Although this new technology creates an easier avenue to communicate, it can also be a dating detriment if one relies on this media too heavily rather than focusing on the more intimate face-to-face dialogue. Here are the five deadly mistakes to avoid:

1. Don’t “over-text” after a first date. Sharing too much or rambling about irrelevant information is a turn-off. Similarly, watch the frequency of texts. It looks overanxious and potentially desperate, Always wait for a reply before texting again.

2. Mass texting to ask people out on a date is a desperate act and will backfire later if people compare notes.

3. Texting during a date is simply bad manners. In Fact, act as though you left your phone at home; don’t answer calls, don’t play games, etc.

4. Don’t rely solely on text messaging after a date. Be sure to only use texting as a supplement to phone calls and in-person meetings, never in place of them.

5. Breaking up with someone by text is a definite no-no. Ending a love relationship in this way or by email are signs of cowardice and disrespect.

Texting is definitely a new means of courting, bonding, creating emotional connection, and planning dates and activities together. But be careful of how you use SMS as it is a two-edged sword and can ruin a relationship.
